French FM defends Tunisia links once again
French Foreign Minister Michele Alliot-Marie has again been forced to defend her links to the regime of ousted Tunisian president Zine Al-Abdine Ben Ali. Alliot-Marie holidayed in Tunisia in December during anti-government protests. She flew there on a private jet belonging to Aziz Miled, a Ben Ali associate. Her office admitted she spoke with Ben Ali during her stay, contradicting her earlier account that her visit was a purely personal affair. Le Canard Enchaine newspaper also reported on Wednesday that her parents bought a stake in a property company from Aziz Miled. Alliot-Marie has refused to resign and has attacked the French media for dragging her parents into the matter. Copyright © 2011 euronews

How NATO’s pipes keep airlines in the sky
Thousands of passengers pass through European airports every day without knowing that their journeys would not have been possible without a little military intervention. That is because their planes have been filled up with fuel carried by a vast network of NATO oil re-supply pipelines. Copyright © 2011 euronews

Yemen opposition defiant on demands
Thousands of angry protesters have once again gathered in the capital of Yemen, to push their demand for the President to step down immediately. Their numbers have swelled dramatically since 40 protestors were killed on Friday when the security forces opened fire. Anger at the shootings has splintered Saleh’s remaining support. There has been a flurry of top-level defections to the opposition. Army officers, including one general who was a close ally of Saleh have defected and now support the pro-reform protesters. Saleh has warned that any attempt at luanching a coup will result in a “bloody” civil war. Saleh has announced he will leave office after elections due in January 2012. But opposition groups have rejected his offer to step down then; they want him out now. Copyright © 2011 euronews

Iranian opposition worry for arrested leaders
Iran’s opposition movement has told euronews they have been unable to contact one of their leaders, Mehdi Karroubi, for over a week. Karroubi and his wife are said to be under house arrest in Tehran. The opposition say a number of government officials visited their apartment late on Monday night. One of Karroubi’s advisors, Mojtaba Vahedi, spoke to euronews by telephone from Washington DC, where he lives in exile. “Yesterday afternoon, some 30 people from the Information Ministry, certainly in coordination with the security and justice departments, came into the building where his office and apartment are,” Vahedi said. “They were very unruly and shouted insults. Eyewitnesses who were there told me that they were the same people who had been outside Mr Karroubi’s place, chanting offensive slogans.” The opposition are also waiting for news on Karroubi’s two sons. His youngest, Ali, has been arrested by the authorities. His other son, Hussein, is said to have escaped arrest as he was not at home when officers came by to seize him. Another key opposition figure, Hossein Mousavi, has also been under house arrest with his wife since February 14th. He led the so-called Green Movement protests in 2009 after Iran’s disputed presidential election in June of that year. Copyright © 2011 euronews
